Hands Like Houses - Bandwidth Band of The Week

Song This Ain’t No Place For Animals

Sample Lyrics:Our hearts at a million miles an hour as we brace for the impact, it makes time stand still. Forcing momentum into a moment, so for a split second, I see your face. In between all the broken glass hanging like a mobile. This is a picture we’ll never quite forget.”

Is there anything better than a kickass rock headbanger?  Seriously people, while love can make you sick, food will inevitably make you fat, booze will make you fall on your face (unless you’re an Aussie, because as we know Americans can’t hold their liquor) and listening to jazz might get your butt whupped; rock is one of those things that you can down over and over without the fear of over-consumption.  From the burbs of Canberra, Australia, Hands Like Houses is a band that creates such music, the crunch-filled, vocally-screaming, roof-thumping, hell-raising goodness that you’d have to be dumber than Glee fan at a Slayer concert not to appreciate.

Trenton Smith

Currently working on a full length album at Chango Studios in sunny Florida, it’s hard not to love what these guys can do with a musical track.  Too complex to be labeled by a single moniker of genre, Hands Like Houses challenges what can be done in the overpopulated rock scene.  There’s a ephemeral quality in their music, like a wisp of fiery smoke on the tip of a cigarette, both deadly and beautiful at the same time, that’s what these rockers are.

Jamal Sabet

Led by gold-throated lead singer Trenton Smith, HLH does so much in this particular song that it’s hard to cover it all. With eerie chimes lurking throughout, “This Ain’t No Place For Animals” often sounds like a childhood nightmare put to music - my god the thing opens up with an actual freaking harp!  Haunting and ghostly at times, don’t be surprised if you feel like you’re listening to the soundtrack of an epic monster movie.  Lyrics refuse to be commonplace and show unique writing skill with genius lines like, “The gasoline is mixing with the oxygen in this carousel, the silence is so surreal // I’ve been misled down empty streets to a heart that never beats, of a body that I can’t keep.” Smith himself seems perfectly built for this type of music. A voice that can induce power, pain, and raw emotion all at once, this man could make the ingredients of Nutella sound badass.

Alex Pearson & Joel Tyrell

What’s truly marvelous is that amidst the paranormal feel of the song the band never gets bogged down by the slogs of the hardcore genre.  They could have easily chosen cliched lines and screamo vocals the dash here and there but instead one gets the feeling that HLH wants to be something more than garden variety.  Breakdowns are very industrial and come off as a rock-driven jack hammer that endlessly builds to a fever pitch of crunchy nirvana.

Matt Cooper

Guitars snap and pop like the bubbles on the top of a freshly poured Coca-Cola courtesy of Matt Cooper and Alex Pearson. Expertly, both artists play off each other brilliantly.  Underneath the face melters Jamal Sabet’s exceptional keyboard work dances like a specter on a foggy night and often chiming like a lost spirit trapped in a cherubic crypt.  But as good as everyone is, the drum/bass relationship between Matty P and Joel Tyrell is a thumping joy to behold.  Explosive and volcanic, seem to be playing hard enough that they are one beat away from eject part of their soul to the farthest reaches of time and space.  The energy that the drum/bass combo creates feels echoing enough to crack the space time continuum! In the end, like all great bands the 6 musicians of HLH are a cohesive mesh of staggering skill and all possess a solidified grasp on what great music is.

In short this Australian band is one of the most exciting to emerge from the scene in years.  Not reliant upon screams, group vocals, or overly-stylized pop-style hooks these guys are coming to take the scene by force.  Already developing a rabid following get on board this rock n roll train of hardcore uber-intensity while you still can.  Hands Like Houses is coming people, get ready to have your minds blown.
